The Sad Flowers

They walked and walked for what seemed like hours

When suddenly they came to a field of flowers.

The sun was just beginning to set

When rain came down and they all got wet.

The rain was hard and heavy coming down

And no one noticed the black blossoms on the ground.

Rupert said, “Let’s take cover in the barn by the field.”

But they ran to the door and found it was sealed.

They took shelter under the eve of the roof

It helped them dry. It was waterproof.

When their eyes began to adjust from the rain

They couldn’t believe the black terrain.

“I cannot believe the view I see

Are my unmasked eyes deceiving me?” asked Rupert.

“Oh yeah, I guess I forgot to inform

These flowers here are not of the norm.

They wear black because they’re still upset

They haven’t found a replacement yet.

Their vocal coach caught the starfever syndrome

And went to live inside the dome.

Around these parts there aren’t many choices

To direct these flowers with their amazing voices,” said Wanda.

Rupert looked at Nellie and said,

“Perhaps this is place where you are led.”

Kale said, “Hey Rupert, you’ve left out one major thing

Nellie Nightingale cannot sing.”

“Kale, you have gotten on my last nerve

Let me tell you something I’ve observed,” said Nellie.

But before Nellie could say another word

Came a noise unlike any had heard.
